Summer wedding ceremony at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake in Montana

There is something about a wedding in Whitefish, Montana that feels completely different from anywhere else. The mountains, the lake, the long summer evenings, and the feeling that everyone has escaped somewhere special for the weekend make it an incredible setting for a destination wedding.

For Tessa and Hunter, though, Whitefish was more than a beautiful backdrop.

Tessa grew up spending time in Montana, so when she and Hunter began planning their wedding from their home in California, they chose a place already woven into her story. The Lodge at Whitefish Lake became the setting for a wedding weekend that felt equal parts destination celebration and homecoming.

With planning by Taylor Betts of Betts & Co, lush white florals by Mum’s Florals, thoughtfully layered textures, live music, and an entire weekend built around their guests, Tessa and Hunter created a celebration that felt elevated without competing with the natural beauty surrounding them.

A Destination Wedding Weekend in Whitefish, Montana

One of my favorite things about destination weddings is that the celebration rarely begins on the wedding day.

When guests have traveled across the country to be together, there is an opportunity to create an entire weekend rather than a single event.

Tessa and Hunter welcomed everyone to Whitefish with a rooftop celebration at 101 Central Belvedere Rooftop, giving their guests their first real taste of the place they had chosen for the weekend.

Set above downtown Whitefish, the welcome party had a relaxed energy while still feeling beautifully considered. Guests could settle in, reconnect, take in the Montana views, and officially begin the celebration.

Live music from the Mike Murray Band added to the atmosphere, while linens from BBJ La Tavola, pieces from Stradley Davidson, florals by Mum’s Florals, and custom paper goods from Pink Champagne Designs brought the design together.

Photographing both the welcome party and wedding day also allowed the final gallery to tell the full story of the weekend — not only the ceremony and reception, but the anticipation and relationships surrounding them.

The Lodge at Whitefish Lake Wedding Venue

For couples considering a Whitefish, Montana destination wedding, The Lodge at Whitefish Lake offers something especially compelling: the landscape becomes an integral part of the wedding experience.

Instead of needing to manufacture a sense of place through design, the lake, mountains, trees, and changing Montana light already establish one.

The Lodge created an ideal backdrop for Tessa and Hunter’s celebration because it felt sophisticated enough for the wedding they envisioned while still unmistakably connected to Montana.

Their guests weren’t simply attending a beautiful wedding venue. They were experiencing Whitefish alongside them.

That distinction made the weekend feel personal.

A White Wedding Palette With Texture and Movement

The wedding design centered around a primarily white floral palette, but it was far from minimal.

Mum’s Florals created lush arrangements filled with dimension, movement, and layers of texture. Rather than introducing a large amount of color, the design relied on shape, scale, greenery, and different varieties of white blooms to create visual interest.

Against the landscape surrounding The Lodge at Whitefish Lake, that restraint was especially beautiful.

The neutral palette allowed Montana to remain part of the design rather than simply serving as the background to it.

Linens, napkins, and chargers from BBJ La Tavola, paired with rentals from Barn Door Event Rentals, continued that sense of understated dimension throughout the reception.

The result felt refined and romantic without becoming overly formal — an approach particularly well suited to an elevated Montana wedding.

A Wedding That Felt Like Montana

The strongest destination weddings usually have a relationship with their location.

For Tessa and Hunter, Montana wasn’t selected simply because it photographed beautifully. It was a place that already meant something to Tessa.

That history gave every part of the weekend more depth.

Guests flew in from California and beyond to experience a place she had loved long before the wedding, turning the weekend into an opportunity to share part of her past while she and Hunter began something new together.

From the rooftop welcome party in downtown Whitefish to their wedding overlooking Whitefish Lake, each event felt connected to where they were.

And that is what made the weekend so memorable.

Live Music Throughout the Wedding Day

Music was another important part of the experience.

Rather than relying on a single form of entertainment throughout the day, Tessa and Hunter incorporated live musicians into multiple portions of the celebration.

Joe Martinez performed during the ceremony, cocktail hour, and dinner, giving those earlier parts of the day a more intimate atmosphere.

Later, The MAC Band shifted the energy for the reception and filled the dance floor.

The change in music naturally created different chapters throughout the wedding day — romantic and relaxed earlier in the celebration, followed by a much higher-energy reception once dinner ended.

Tessa’s Sarah Seven Wedding Dress

Tessa wore a gown by Sarah Seven, whose clean, modern designs paired beautifully with the setting.

Against the textures and landscape of Whitefish, the simplicity of the gown photographed especially well. Rather than feeling overly styled against the environment, her look remained effortless, editorial, and timeless.

Hair and makeup by Covet Beauty & Bridal completed the look with the same refined approach.

Photographing a Wedding at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

As a destination wedding photographer, I am always looking at more than individual beautiful moments.

I want the photographs to communicate what it actually felt like to be there.

For a wedding in Montana, that means intentionally incorporating the environment into the gallery while still prioritizing the people and relationships at the center of the weekend.

Wide photographs showing the landscape matter.

So do the quiet interactions between family members before the ceremony.

The details matter.

So does the chaos of a packed dance floor later that night.

Photographing Tessa and Hunter’s full wedding weekend gave us the opportunity to create a gallery that included all of those pieces — editorial portraits, documentary moments, beautiful design, sweeping Montana scenery, film photographs, and the smaller interactions that often become some of the most meaningful images afterward.

The finished photographs feel connected to Whitefish without ever losing sight of the reason everyone traveled there in the first place.

Tessa and Hunter.

Planning a Wedding at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

If you’re considering getting married at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake, summer is an especially beautiful season for couples who want to make the landscape a major part of their wedding weekend. Tessa and Hunters wedding took place in July!

Whitefish also works particularly well for destination weddings because the celebration can extend far beyond the ceremony itself.

A wedding weekend here might include a welcome party in downtown Whitefish, time on or near the lake, dinner with family and friends, outdoor activities, and a wedding day at The Lodge.

For couples whose guests will already be traveling, building those additional opportunities to spend time together can make the entire experience feel much more intentional.
